Erstmals seit ihrem über 35-jährigen Bestehen hat SENS eRecycling im vergangenen Jahr gemeinsam mit ihren Partnern über 100 000 Tonnen elektrische und elektronische Geräte verarbeitet. Daraus holten sie 70 000 Tonnen Wertstoffe heraus und führten diese zurück in den Rohstoffkreislauf. Das sind 4% mehr als 2023. Im selben Zeitraum entsorgten sie 187 Tonnen Schadstoffe, was einer Zunahme von rund 5% gegenüber dem Vorjahr entspricht. Ein Grund für diese Steigerungen sieht Pasqual Zopp, Geschäftsführer von SENS eRecycling, in der höheren Effizienz der Recyclingprozesse. Zudem spiele auch der allgemeine Trend eine Rolle, dass immer mehr Elektrogeräte mit Akkus und Batterien statt mit Kabel betrieben werden.
«Es freut mich sehr, dass wir für das Jahr 2024 mit über 100 000 Tonnen einen neuen Rekord in der Verarbeitung von elektrischen und elektronischen Geräten erzielen konnten», sagt Pasqual Zopp, der seit 2022 als Geschäftsführer SENS eRecycling führt. «Allein 187 Tonnen Schadstoffe, darunter Quecksilber und Kältemittel, haben wir gemeinsam mit unseren Partnern im vergangenen Jahr fachgerecht entsorgt und über 70 000 Tonnen Wertstoffe recycelt. Das entspricht ungefähr der Umweltbelastungen im Umfang des Jahresverbrauchs der Einwohnerinnen und Einwohner der Stadt Thun. «Dank der Recyclinganlagen im SENS-Netzwerk, die zu den modernsten in ganz Europa gehören, konnten wir die Effizienz im Recyclingprozess weiter steigern», weiss Pasqual Zopp. Dies zeigt, dass sich die stetigen Investitionen der Partnerbetriebe von SENS eRecycling in den neusten Stand der Technik auszahlen. [1] Hinzu kommt der allgemeine Trend, dass immer mehr Elektrogeräte mit teils Akkus und Batterien statt mit Kabel betrieben werden. Im Jahr 2024 nahmen die verarbeiteten Mengen an Schadstoffen insgesamt um 5% und jene an verarbeiteten Wertstoffen um 4% zu, wobei seit Jahren Eisen, Kunststoffe, Stahl, Kupfer und Aluminium mengenmässig die Wertstofftabelle anführen (vgl. Tabelle 1).

Gerätemenge an PV-Modulen verdoppelt
Bei den verarbeiteten Mengen verzeichnete SENS eRecycling einzig bei den Kühl-, Gefrier- und Klimageräten einen leichten Rückgang (–8% im Vergleich zu 2023). Dies liegt insbesondere daran, dass 2023 grössere Lagerbestände abgebaut wurden. Inzwischen haben sich die Mengen wieder zu jenen vor 2022 eingependelt. Bei den Elektrogross- und Elektrokleingeräten stiegen die verarbeiteten Mengen dagegen mit je 8% gegenüber 2023 sowie 11% bei den Leuchtmitteln deutlich. Besonders sticht allerdings die Zunahme um 100% in der Verarbeitung von Photovoltaik-Modulen hervor: Diese Verdoppelung führt SENS eRecycling darauf zurück, dass in der Schweiz aktuell vermehrt Module aufgrund ihres Alters ausgemustert werden. So beträgt die Lebensdauer der PV-Module in der Regel zwischen 25 und 30 Jahren. Um diese jedoch zu verlängern und die Module als Secondhand-Produkte erneut auf den Markt zu bringen, hat SENS eRecycling erst kürzlich mit dem Projekt PV Circle den Grundstein für eine zirkuläre Nutzung der PV-Module gelegt. Leichter Rückgang beim Gesamtumweltnutzen
Obwohl der Gesamtnutzen des Elektrogeräts-Recyclings um etwa 4% im vergangenen Jahr zurückgegangen ist, bleibt er mit 1 443 Milliarden UBP auf einem vergleichbar hohen Niveau wie vor zwei Jahren. Mit 712 Milliarden UBP tragen nach wie vor die Kühl-, Gefrier- und Klimageräte am meisten zum Gesamtumweltnutzen bei. Dies trotz des leichten Rückgangs des Umweltnutzen in dieser Gerätekategorie von –7% gegenüber 2023. Auch hier liegt der Grund darin, dass im Vorjahr Lagerbestände an Kühlgeräten verarbeitet wurden und eine deutlich höhere Menge recycelt wurde als im Jahr 2024. Erstaunlich ist auch die relativ geringe Menge an 1 000 Tonnen Leuchtmitteln, die aber an dritter Stelle mit über 54 Milliarden UBP zum Gesamtumweltnutzen von SENS eRecycling beiträgt. Während bei den Kühl-, Gefrier- und Klimageräten vor allem die Vermeidung von schädlichen Klimagasen wie FCKW und HFC die Umwelt entlasten, erzielt bei den Leuchtmitteln insbesondere die Vermeidung von Quecksilber einen hohen Umweltnutzen (siehe Grafik 1).
Die Bedeutung der Schadstoffentfrachtung und Wertstoffaufbereitung in Zukunft
Der deutliche Rückgang von –25% gegenüber 2023 bei den Haushaltskleingeräten ist dagegen eher ungewöhnlich. Einen möglichen Grund für diesen Rückgang trotz der höheren Sammelmengen gegenüber 2023 sieht Pasqual Zopp darin, dass die Recyclingbetriebe immer weniger elektrische Geräte verarbeiten, welche gefährliche Polychlorierten Biphenyle (PCB) enthalten: «Da sich PCB nur sehr langsam in der Umwelt abbauen, dürfen diese Schadstoffe nicht mehr in heutigen Geräten verarbeitet werden. Entsprechend nimmt der Anteil an Schadstoff belasteten Geräten in unseren Recyclingbetrieben seit Jahren ab», (siehe Grafik 2).
Die Schadstoffentfrachtung trägt mit insgesamt 1 404 Milliarden UBP den Hauptanteil am Gesamtumweltnutzen von SENS eRecycling. Insbesondere die fach- und umweltgerechte Verarbeitung von Polychlorierten Biphenyle (PCB), Kühl- und Kältemitteln sowie Quecksilber tragen einen entscheidenden Beitrag zur Umweltleistung des SENS-Rücknahmesystems bei. Die Aufbereitung von Wertstoffen mit 40 Milliarden UBP stellt zwar nur einen geringen Anteil, aber einen nicht unwesentlichen, am Umweltnutzen dar. «Längerfristig wird die Bedeutung der Wertstoffaufbereitung weiter zunehmen, insbesondere wenn wir es gemeinsam mit unseren Partnern aus Wirtschaft und Politik schaffen, in Zukunft weitere Rohstoffkreisläufe wie zum Beispiel jene von PV-Modulen zu schliessen», ist der Geschäftsführer von SENS eRecycling überzeugt.

Für die Berechnung des Umweltnutzens, der sich aus dem Recycling von elektrischen und elektronischen Geräten ergibt, vergleicht das Unternehmen carbotech jeweils die jährliche Leistung von SENS eRecycling (IST-Zustand) mit einem Referenzszenario «ohne SENS». Dabei geht sie vom Grundsatz aus, dass bei einem Szenario «ohne SENS» gleich hohe Gerätemengen anfallen wie beim heutigen System «mit SENS». Auch nimmt sie an, dass in einem System «ohne SENS» die ökonomisch sinnvollen Wertstoffe aus den Elektrogeräten herausgeholt, die teure Schadstoffentfrachtung allerdings vernachlässigt würde. Die Differenz zwischen dem IST-Zustand «mit SENS» und dem Szenanrio «ohne SENS» ergibt die Umweltleistung von SENS eRecycling. Diese wird in Umweltbelastungspunkten (UBP) ausgewiesen und seit 2022 nach der Methode der ökologischen Knappheit 2021 berechnet. Diese wurde unter Mitarbeit des Bundesamts für Umwelt entwickelt und berücksichtigt nebst der Umweltsituation auch die Umweltziele der Schweiz.
